Think Cheese Think Peas, You'll Love These...

A veritable feast of vegan content

This week’s edition is sponsored by Cheesy Peas! (not really, but hopefully there’s some Fast Show fans here and soon all will become clear. If not just ignore this bit.)

Hi and welcome to the very first edition of VedgyVoice - a weekly (hopefully) newsletter from the team at Getvedgy.com. The thinking behind this newsletter is simple - I wanted a place to share interesting vegan related news and products, as well as putting my wit to good use (so get ready for that), but didn’t want to clog up the website.

So this is the solution, and hopefully you lovely people will also find the content interesting. Then maybe you’ll share it with you friends and family who will also find it interesting. Then maybe they’ll share it with their friends and family who… well you get the picture. So on and so forth until our ultimate goal is achieved - Vegan world domination.

Next week’s intro will likely be less wordy, so that’s something to look forward to.

Featured Story

Earthling Ed, what a guy! Not content with the excellent ‘This is Vegan Propaganda (and other lies the meat industry tells you)’, he’s announced his 2nd book: How to Argue With a Meat Eater (And Win Every Time).

If you don’t know who he is, take it from me he is the authority on the art of getting the vegan argument across to even the most closed minded of people.

I’ll definitely be pre-ordering and if you want to you can do so here.

Latest News

New funding and research boost for plant-based alternative ‘Cheese from Peas’ (this is the Fast Show related bit btw) - The "Cheese from Peas" project aims to create sustainable plant-based cheese from UK-grown yellow peas. With over £300,000 funding from Innovate UK, and additional support from Rothamsted Research and Big Idea Ventures, they're advancing towards a commercial product, anticipated within the next year.

I quite like the sound of cheese made from yellow peas. Hopefully it’s good as tbh, while there are a few pretty good vegan cheese options (Violife slices, Applewood vegan smoked to a name a couple). Most of them are rubbish.

World’s dogs going vegan ‘would save more emissions than UK produces’ Research from the University of Winchester reveals that if all the world's dogs adopted a vegan diet, it would save more greenhouse gas emissions than the entire UK produces, showcasing the environmental benefits of plant-based diets for pets. Transitioning dogs to veganism could save significant land and water resources, and potentially feed an additional 450 million people.

Dogs are omnivores. So they could thrive on a vegan diet. Sounds like a great idea to me. Also I bet even they couldn’t tell the difference between This Isn’t Pork Sausages and actual pork sausages.

Does Vegan Food Need to Be “Masculine” to Attract Men? New Research Investigates. A study highlights that adapting a more masculine marketing approach may alter men's perception of vegan food, aiding in overcoming gender-based dietary stereotypes which have long pigeonholed plant-based diets as less suitable for men compared to women. This shift in marketing strategies could potentially encourage more men to embrace veganism, contributing to individual and planetary health benefits.

Me man, me make fire. Absolutely wild that certain men feel like their masculinity is defined by what they eat. As if they are out there fighting with bears and taking down bulls with their bare hands, as opposed to picking up a pre-packaged steak down the local Tesco. Anyway how can we make veg more manly… Patatas Bravas!

I’ve seen a lot of arguments recently on social media (I know imagine that!), some of which I couldn’t resist wading in on. Mainly on the subject of what is and isn’t vegan when it comes to things like vegetables grown using animal manure as a fertiliser, vague ‘flavouring’ on product labels and the (unlikely) claim that it might contain honey etc.

I think for anyone new to veganism or those just looking into what it’s all about, it’s important not to get bogged down in small details and focus on the bigger picture. On that note the definition of veganism as defined by The Vegan Society, is well worth a read if you haven’t already:

Recipes

This is just a selection of a few recipes that I have either tried, plan on trying, or just think they sound tasty but beyond my limited culinary skills.

Quote of the Week

“Until he extends his circle of compassion to include all living things, man will not himself find peace.”

Product Pick

This week I have been mostly eating (if you know, you know) OMV! Deliciously Vegan Choc Flavour Spread. I can’t get enough of this stuff, on a bagel, on a biscuit or just on a spoon straight out the jar. If you miss Nutella you’ll love it.

The Proof with Simon Hill - while not specifically a vegan podcast, Simon champions a plant-based, whole-food diet. The podcast is very much science driven and research-backed and really digs deep into the nutrition and health side of things.
