Early human diets composed of 80% plants

PLUS: Plant protein linked to healthy aging

“For as long as men massacre animals, they will kill each other. Indeed, he who sows the seed of murder and pain cannot reap joy and love.”

What’s Happening?

  • The oft-used description of early humans as "hunter-gatherers" should be changed to "gatherer-hunters,"

  • Analysis from burial sites in Peru shows that early human diets in the Andes Mountains were composed of 80% plant matter and 20% meat.

  • Haas notes that archaeologists now have the tools to understand early human diets, and their results are not what they anticipated.

  • Heather Mills has bought back her vegan meat brand VBites in a £1 million rescue deal.

  • Having rescued the company from the brink of collapse, Mills has now started the rebuilding process. She has already re-employed 40 out of 84 staff and plans to bring back more.

  • Now, Mills has taken back control of VBites and pledged to make the company a “market mover.”

  • Research released by personal finance comparison site Finder estimates that the UK’s vegan population has risen by 1.1 million in a single year.

  • These numbers come in light of multiple headlines noting a fall in the sale of vegan products like meat analogues, and subsequently asking the ‘vegan bubble’ has burst.

  • According to Finder the number of UK vegetarians has fallen, representing some 5.8 per cent (or 3.1 million) of the population, however this, it has been argued, could be down to some veggies becoming vegan.

  • Aldi UK has expanded its Plant Menu range by launching plant-based smoked salmon slices and a new selection of vegan cheeses.

  • The No Salmon Slices are smoked over beechwood for an authentic taste and texture.

  • Aldi has also launched its largest-ever vegan cheese range, including three varieties of cheddar alternatives plus Grated Mozzarella, French Style Round Camembert, feta-style Greek Style Salad Cheese, and parmesan-style Grated Hard Cheese.

  • A new study found that women who include enough protein, particularly plant protein, in their diet are likely to remain healthy as they age.

  • The researchers analyzed self-reported data from the Harvard-based Nurses’ Health Study, which followed 48,000 female healthcare professionals from 1984 to 2016.

  • Although eating protein in any form in midlife was associated with healthier aging, plant protein seemed to have a greater beneficial effect.
