Response to growing demand for plant-based products
Plus: Mental blocks that stop people from going vegan
Happy Friday! In this week’s news Lidl sees huge increase in plant-based food sales, Sinless food offer cracking vegan eggs, mental blocks that stop people going vegan and La Vie’s new range of club sandwiches selling fast (and hopefully on route to the UK soon!)
We also share a stark statistic on farmed animals and the best ever takedown of an argument against veganism. Plus a delicious tried and tested orzo and chickpea recipe and an easy no bake lemon cheesecake!
“If you really care about animals, then stop trying to figure out how to exploit them 'compassionately'. Just stop exploiting them.”
What’s Happening?
Lidl has committed to boosting the sales of its plant-based food options by 10% across European stores by 2025 as part of a broader sustainability initiative.
This initiative is in response to the growing consumer demand for plant-based products and Lidl's goal to offer more sustainable and ethical food choices.
Lidl is enhancing its range of plant-based products, including ready meals, snacks, and ingredients, to make plant-based eating more accessible and appealing to a wide range of customers.
Sinless Food has developed a range of plant-based egg alternatives that mimic the taste, texture, and functionality of fried, poached, and hard-boiled eggs, aiming to cater to both vegans and flexitarians.
These vegan eggs are made from a blend of pea protein, nutritional yeast, and black salt, offering a cholesterol-free and environmentally friendly alternative to traditional eggs.
Sinless Food is planning to expand distribution across various markets, with a focus on enhancing accessibility and appealing to a wider audience interested in sustainable and ethical eating options.
Many individuals worry about how their social circles will react to their vegan lifestyle choice, fearing isolation or ridicule. This apprehension can be a significant barrier to going vegan.
The idea of drastically changing one’s diet can seem daunting, with concerns about maintaining nutritional balance, learning new recipes, and finding suitable food options while dining out.
A strong sentimental attachment to traditional meals and the role of animal products in cultural or familial traditions can make the transition to veganism challenging for some people.
La Vie has launched a vegan version of the classic club sandwich, which is now available in major French supermarkets. The product is gaining popularity for its authentic taste and texture that closely mimic traditional meat.
The vegan club sandwiches are made using La Vie's plant-based bacon, praised for its smoky flavor and crispiness, which provides a satisfying alternative to pork.
Following strong sales performances and positive consumer feedback, La Vie plans to expand their product range and availability, aiming to reach more consumers seeking plant-based options.

Did You Know?
If humans were killed at the same rate we currently kill land animals for food, the entire human population would be gone in 42 days.
Estimates suggest that globally, over 70 billion farmed animals are killed each year worldwide.
As of the latest data, the global human population is approximately 8 billion.
If humans were killed at the same rate that we currently kill animals for food, it would take just 42 days to eliminate the entire human population of 8 billion.
Watch & Learn
I’ve heard a lot of stupid excuses used to try and justify eating animals (probably spend too much time on Facebook) but the “but animals eat other animals!” one has got to be the most ridiculous.
What’s Cooking?
We tried out this Tomato Baked Orzo with Chickpeas and Olives recipe from @thenewbaguette during the week. Loved the unique ingredients combination, the salty olives, the mushrooms and the orzo and chickpeas came together really well with the tomato base. Easy to make and perfect for a sunny spring evening.
