“Perhaps our society will soon realise, with due horror, that we have been late in extending our respect and consideration to all of those who need protection.”

What’s Happening?

  • Top scientists signed a declaration recognising the potential consciousness of insects, marking a pivotal shift in scientific understanding.

  • This acknowledgment prompts a reevaluation of how we perceive and treat insects, urging for more ethical considerations in our interactions with them.

  • By acknowledging the consciousness of insects, this declaration initiates discussions on broader animal consciousness and welfare issues, fostering a more compassionate approach to our relationship with non-human beings.

  • A startup has developed a technology to make iron in plant-based meat easier to absorb.

  • This innovation addresses a common concern about iron absorption in plant-based diets, potentially improving the nutritional value of plant-based meat alternatives.

  • The technology represents a significant step forward in enhancing the nutritional profile of plant-based foods, contributing to the accessibility and appeal of plant-based diets for consumers.

  • A recent study suggests that dogs fed nutritionally complete plant-based diets can maintain their health.

  • The study, conducted by researchers, challenges the notion that dogs must consume meat to thrive and highlights the viability of plant-based diets for canine companions.

  • These findings contribute to ongoing discussions about sustainable and ethical pet food options, offering insights into potential alternatives to traditional meat-based diets for dogs.

  • PETA conducted an extensive study on the transformative potential of animal-free agriculture, examining its environmental and ethical implications.

  • The study explored various benefits of transitioning away from traditional animal-based farming, including reduced greenhouse gas emissions, land use efficiency, and improved animal welfare.

  • Insights from the study could inspire significant changes within the agriculture industry, prompting policymakers, businesses, and consumers to adopt more sustainable and compassionate food production practices.

“A Very Impressive Lady”

Maribeth struggled to walk growing up and wasn't seen as profitable for the farmers. She was to be sold for cheap meat, but with a stroke of luck was saved from the farm and is now getting the love and care she deserves. 🐮

What’s Cooking?

While we love a good vegan cookbook (One Pot Vegan is a longtime favourite) and there’s something very appealing about a physical book on the worktop while you cook up a storm (or throw together something at least edible!). There’s also an endless supply of fantastic vegan recipes available online for free. Here’s a few of our recent favourites:

One Pan Lentil Lasagne This easy-to-make one-pan lasagne is brimming with protein. Topped with a velvety tofu cheese and kale pesto, it's a delightful twist on a classic dish. (from the creators of One Pot Vegan)

Tofu & Broccoli Stir Fry A quick an easy tofu stir-fry incorporating a flavourful umami sauce. Great for a quick to make midweek meal.

Easy Creamy Vegetable Curry A really tasty vibrant curry. Any and all veggies are welcome to this party - we chucked in a load of courgette, sweet potato, peppers and cauliflower. Pair with rice and/or naan bread.
