“It is ironic that we believe that empathy and complex emotions only really exist in humans but we then fail to empathize with the animals who suffer at our hands.”
📰 What’s Happening?
A recent systematic review has confirmed significant health and environmental benefits associated with plant-based diets, highlighting reduced risks of chronic diseases and lower carbon footprints.
The study aggregates data from various sources, providing a comprehensive overview that supports the shift towards plant-based eating as a sustainable lifestyle choice.
Emphasising the urgency of dietary changes, the review advocates for increased awareness and adoption of plant-based diets to mitigate climate change and improve public health outcomes.
A recent study suggests that early humans had a diet heavily reliant on plants, challenging the popular notion of prehistoric humans as primarily meat-eaters.
Analysis of archaeological evidence shows that plant foods, not just meat, provided the majority of energy intake and nutritional needs in early human diets.
The findings highlight the adaptability and dietary diversity of early humans, underlining the importance of plant-based foods in human evolutionary history.
Over 50 members of the U.S. Congress have addressed a letter to President Joe Biden, urging the inclusion of plant-based food solutions in his climate change policy to meet environmental goals.
The letter emphasises the significant impact of animal agriculture on greenhouse gas emissions and promotes plant-based diets as a crucial part of the climate solution.
It highlights the need for federal support for plant-based food initiatives, including subsidies and educational campaigns, to facilitate a shift towards sustainable eating habits.
Recent media claims suggesting that vegan foods may be worse for health and the environment than meat have been scrutinised and found to be misleading.
Analysis shows that whilst some processed vegan products might not be the healthiest, plant-based diets are generally more sustainable and beneficial for health than diets high in animal products.
Consumers are encouraged to critically evaluate media reports and consider the overall benefits of veganism for health and the environment.

“Non-vegans presume that the hardest part of going vegan is finding food or getting enough vitamin B12 and yet, in my experience and the experience of many vegans that come and speak to me, these are far from the hardest part of being vegan. So in today’s video, I thought I would sit down and chat about my experience as a vegan and what I genuinely struggle with.”
If you haven’t read Ed’s first book This Is Vegan Propaganda: (And Other Lies the Meat Industry Tells You) I would highly recommend it. His latest book How to Argue With a Meat Eater (And Win Every Time) is next on my reading list.

I always find humour can be a good way to gently encourage non-vegan friends and family to think about their choices without them immediately seeing you as the “preachy vegan” (although I can do plenty of preaching too!).
