📰 What’s Happening?

  • Lidl Netherlands' study, in partnership with Wageningen University and WRI, found that placing meat alternatives next to conventional meat increased sales of the alternatives by 7% over six months.

  • The initiative aligns with Lidl’s goal to have 60% of its protein sales be plant-based by 2030.

  • Following the positive results, Lidl Netherlands plans to enhance the visibility and appeal of meat alternatives, including larger pack sizes and improved marketing strategies.

  • Recent studies show that vegan and vegetarian diets significantly lower the risk of heart disease and certain cancers, such as prostate and gastrointestinal cancers.

  • These diets help reduce risk factors like high blood pressure, high cholesterol, and obesity, contributing to better overall cardiovascular health.

  • Benefits are largely due to high intake of fibre and antioxidants from fruits and vegetables, which reduce inflammation and arterial plaque buildup. Partial adoption of plant-based eating also offers significant health advantages.

  • UK animal rescues are overwhelmed due to a surge in dogs needing rehoming, with some warning that a "mass cull" may be necessary.

  • The increase in surrendered dogs is attributed to over-breeding, lack of regulation, and the cost of living crisis, making it difficult for people to afford vet bills and care for their pets.

  • The post-lockdown decline in adoptions exacerbates the problem, with charities struggling to find homes for an ever-growing number of dogs.
