📰 What’s Happening?
Lidl Netherlands' study, in partnership with Wageningen University and WRI, found that placing meat alternatives next to conventional meat increased sales of the alternatives by 7% over six months.
The initiative aligns with Lidl’s goal to have 60% of its protein sales be plant-based by 2030.
Following the positive results, Lidl Netherlands plans to enhance the visibility and appeal of meat alternatives, including larger pack sizes and improved marketing strategies.
Recent studies show that vegan and vegetarian diets significantly lower the risk of heart disease and certain cancers, such as prostate and gastrointestinal cancers.
These diets help reduce risk factors like high blood pressure, high cholesterol, and obesity, contributing to better overall cardiovascular health.
Benefits are largely due to high intake of fibre and antioxidants from fruits and vegetables, which reduce inflammation and arterial plaque buildup. Partial adoption of plant-based eating also offers significant health advantages.
UK animal rescues are overwhelmed due to a surge in dogs needing rehoming, with some warning that a "mass cull" may be necessary.
The increase in surrendered dogs is attributed to over-breeding, lack of regulation, and the cost of living crisis, making it difficult for people to afford vet bills and care for their pets.
The post-lockdown decline in adoptions exacerbates the problem, with charities struggling to find homes for an ever-growing number of dogs.
