Plus: World’s First Vegan ‘Flank’ Steak Launches in UK
Welcome to the VedgyVoice.
Before we get started with this week’s newsletter I want to let you know that going forward the VedgyVoice will be published every other week rather than weekly. I want to keep the newsletter as relevant as possible and the reality is that some weeks it’s a bit of a struggle to pull together interesting and relevant news. Hopefully moving to every two weeks will solve that problem whilst still keeping you regularly updated!
This week we have:

📰 What’s Happening?
There is a rising call to ban greyhound racing in the UK due to high death and injury rates among racing dogs, with over 2,700 deaths and 22,000 injuries reported between 2018 and 2022.
Campaigners argue that the practice is cruel and unethical, leading to frequent injuries and fatalities as greyhounds race at speeds up to 40 mph on curved tracks.
Critics suggest better regulation instead of a ban, but advocates stress the inherent risks make the sport untenable.
The UK has seen its first decrease in meat production in over a decade, driven by changing consumer habits and increased awareness of environmental issues.
Meat production dropped by 2.4% in 2023, reflecting a shift towards plant-based diets and alternative protein sources.
This decline aligns with broader trends in the food industry, emphasizing sustainability and reducing the environmental impact of food production.
Heather Mills has acquired the award-winning online plant-based store, Alternative Stores, to create a central hub for vegan products, supporting British family-owned businesses.
This acquisition is part of Mills' broader strategy to consolidate her plant-based enterprises, including VBites, and to establish a convenient one-stop online store for high-quality vegan products.
Mills aims to provide an ethical marketplace to help small family businesses struggling with corporate-owned platforms, ensuring a wide variety of nutritious and delicious vegan options.
